Hello Phnom Penh

semi-overcast 34 °C

Hi Everyone!

Caught an early flight out of Bangkok this morning. Sat next to a lovely gentleman, Peter, who is working for a NGO here looking at the enviromental impact of tourism on Cambodia...we chatted all the way and he gave me his card in case of need. He was really interested in my choices of destinations here based on eco-guesthouses/farms...a huge growth market would you believe. He wants a full report when I am home! Cambodia is dry at the moment and I felt the dust in the air as soon as I arrived. Made a new friend in the visa queue, Angela, who is here to do voluntary special needs work for three months, she is from England and was being picked up by another worker at the aide organisation and said I was welcome to come along. Hannah, who has been here for 3 years organised a Tuk Tuk to drive us all in to town. She sure knows this city!!!. They dropped me off at my guesthouse, the Boddhi tree....a very, charming little spot with a stunning garden courtyard. I felt at home immediately. This afternoon I went out to the killing fields...about 15klms out of Phnom Penh ( I think to understand this place , you must first appreciate where it has come from and the devastation it endured under the cruel Pol Pot regime)...a sombre experince indeed. This evening I have been having a few drinks with my new friends at the FCC ( Foreign Correspondents Club), we sipped G&T's overlooking the river ,watching the passing parade and counting the geckos on the wall! A fantastic spot. Tomorrow I will explore more of this interesting city....I am not yet sure of the reason, but I love it here, perhaps it is the warmth of the people, their smiles or just the feeling of hope here for a brighter future...I already know this will not be my last time to Cambodia...Take care all xxx

First stop Bangkok

semi-overcast 33 °C

Hello Family & Friends!

Here I am in Bangkok, first stop before the real adventure begins. Arrived amidst a monsoonal storm last night and due to a little misunderstanding about locations of my hotel with my taxi driver, arrived at the Pathumwan Princess Hotel resembling a drowned rat. Had a wonderful flight and felt very spoilt sitting in business class. It sure was nice to be on the other side for a change!. The new Bangkok Airport is amazing, apparently now the largest in the world. Reminded me somewhat of the Frankfurt airport ( You know that one well Boss!). However latest reports are that it is sinking in places! The hotel is fantastic ( Thank you Bindsy for the recommendation, love the free wake up coffee in the lobby!) and for those of you familiar with this town, just next to the MBK centre (aka shoppers paradise). However, shopping will have to wait...my backpack will just not allow it. Having a relaxing day...foot massage, a swim and a nice lunch at one of my favorite spots here. Early start tomorrow...off to Phnom Penh on the first flight out....so my journey begins.

Will be in touch soon....take care, Janie x
